Wave propagationbetween two islands

Hello everyone,

I am trying to simulate the wave propagation between two islands in the Indian Ocean, namely Mauritius and Rodrigues. My current challenge is to load an OSM file covering these two islands (How to Convert Open Steet Map file in WinProp (youtube.com)) since in OpenStreetMap I am getting this message "

You requested too many nodes (limit is 50000). Either request a smaller area, or use planet.osm" 

Can anyone help me out?

Dear Darnel,

I know you raised another question on how to install the student version of WRAP which was answered by Zeina.

Even if you install the 2023.1 version of WRAP, you cannot include the map outside of Sweden, because of the limitation of the student version of WRAP.

Therefore, I'd like to recommend you to install the Feko 2024 version, where there was no limitation in using Feko, WinProp, and WRAP. (Altair changed/removed the policy (=limitation) from 2024 version.)

After installing Feko (I mean normal version from Altair marketplace, not student version), please download/install the WRAP from the following link.

Another possible option is to keep using a WinProp simulation by exporting maps from WRAP (of the two islands) to WinProp.

Please refer to the document ExportMapdata_WRAP_to_WinProp.pdf available inside WRAP Installation, accessible via WRAP GUI (Help->Browse documents->Presentations).

I found out quite useful answer options below:

1) Generate smaller requests, and later merge them before processing (this is probably not an ideal method, generally).

2) Download planet.osm, which is a database dump of the whole of OpenStreetMap, and process it. Since it is a huge file (several GB), the first step when processing this file is usually to extract the part which is interesting for you, and there are already preprocessed extracts available (e.g. on Geofabrik).

If you select 1), then you can merge all the database files by using the following steps in WallMan.

1) Open one .odb database.

2) Import the other .odb database (File > Import > WinProp binary database).

3) Save as a new .odb file.

Thank you for your help and the link provided. I have tried these steps earlier:

Option 1:

Selected a smaller aperture in OpenStreetMaps
Downloaded the .osm file for that region of interest
Convert Urban Database--> Vector Database
1. Section import filter set to ".osm"
2. Geodetic Coordinates

When generating the ".odb" file, the 3D rendered is flat, that is, all the terrain features, including mountains, have been flattened and only the buildings have been generated in 3D objects (rectangular and cylindrical).

Option 2:

Create a GGIS project with all the features of interest

export project to ".DXF" format
in Wallman --> Conversion of Urban Vector Database --> AutoCad (*dwg, *dxf)
convert building-polygon layer to walls
set height of all 2D objects in the building-polygon layer to 4m

Option 3:

Convert Topo Database (select the convert additionally to vector database format(*.tdv)
Select GeoTiff file (in this case a DEM GeoTiff file)

when reducing to a smaller aperture, the conversion still does not provide the z plane as the mountainous features are not visible.

When using the converted ".odb" file, the propagation rendering still does not represent the z-axis.

Is there any other way to use DEM GeoTiff files to have a 3D rendering/visualisation of the regions of interest, in this case, Mauritius and the outer islands in the Indian Ocean, to analyse wave propagation?

Hello Fabrice,

Regarding the Option 1, the WinProp WallMan can convert only building and vegetation vectors with relative heights above ground from the .osm to the .odb.

I am not sure the OSM data include any topo data such as mountains.

That's why the WallMan has the conversion feature for the outdoor vector database (.odb) from the OSM.

Let me check with our experts on how to help you simulate the wave propagation between two islands in the Indian Ocean, namely Mauritius and Rodrigues.

As I said before, to show you another possible simulation option, we have prepared one WRAP simulation including two islands as a wgc file (attached), which contains only the terrain data.

Please download the attached file, and then follow these steps:

1) Login to WRAP
2) Open Map Window (From GUI Menu, Select Window->New Map)
3) In map Window, Settings->Geographical->Load/Restore

4) And then Click No

5) Select the wgc file the user saved and click Open

6) Select that file from the list of available geo classes, and click Select

7) If you cannot see anything (because of different view settings), edit the map centre position to Mauritius (20.3484° S, 57.5522° E) from Menu selection Settings->Map center Position..

8) Then zoom in and user should notice 3 islands (that are Reunion, Mauritius and Rodrigues from left to right)

Hello Mr Jaehoon,

Thank you for your help and the clear steps to make it happen. Sadly the Student Edition of FEKO installed does not have WRAP (see screenshot below). I am looking for the process to have it installed. As soon as I get to run the simulation, I will give you feedback.

Good morning Jaehoon,

Indeed, I had a response from Zeina and yes there's the Sweden Demo. In the process of getting the FEKO 2024.1 version, it is not available in Student Edition, and I need to create a new profile as a private user to access it. I am waiting for the Sales Team's response to see if I will be granted access. In parallel I'll try the WinProp route and keep you updated.

I have not been able to install the normal version of Feko 2024, but I have been able to install the 2024.1 Student Bundle Version of Feko. I am not sure if:

it will have the same limitations that the 2023 Student Bundle Version has
Whether WRAP will have the same limitation, that is, only limited to the Sweden model.

On the other hand, I tried to install the WRAP 2024 which was linked in the earlier conversation, but it didn't work (see screenshot).

Please advise if there is a 2024.1 version for WRAP.

I am not aware how the student Feko version and WRAP programs work together.

(Sorry to say, but I've never tried with the student Feko version.)

As far as I know, there is only one WRAP installation file. (No WRAP student version.)
