Fluent EDEM coupling - save simulation time by passing CFD field?
Hi,
I noticed that in the latest Fluent -EDEM coupling tools in the forum, the coupling tool computes coupling forces on each individual particle and send it to edem. However, in Fluent - Rocky coupling, the CFD fluid field is passed to EDEM and fluid forces, such as drag force is calculated within rocky DEM.
Is it possible for Fluent -EDEM coupling to do the same thing? Since I am simulating very fine particle, whose size is up to one micrometer. And my problem is both EDEM and Fluent has to use a very small timestep. EDEM 5e-9s and Fluent can use at most 5e-6s . If I further increase the Fluent timestep, unrealistic high velocity particle will be observed. But I want to calculate a total of 1s so the full simualtion is very time-consuming. However, I noticed that in rocky -Fluent coupling, the Fluent timestep could be set to 1e-4, or maybe 2e-4 and the simulation could run well.
So is it possible for Fluent-EDEM coupling to pass CFD field? Or is there any alternative way to increase Fluent timestep to save computation time?

Hi Yang,
Unfortunately not with the standard coupling however you could consider the 1-way option, where you can also import multiple fields if required. If the particles are very small and the concentration low the 1-way option can often be the best approach.Regards
