Fixed Length Text File
Specifically this is for the FDIC Alert File which our core processing vendor can supply, BUT I have a request that requires me to create the file. Does anyone in the community happen to have anything built for this file and would like to share?

Hi Janet,
The export to fixed length text file option is not available in DPS and you cannot export a table as fixed length text file in DPS.
You can try one of the following options:
1- You can select the table in DPS, then click on the three bars button on the top left corner of the DPS page, and select Open in Classic Mode option. The DPS passes the data source to the Classic. You can then export it as fixed length text.
2- In DPS, you can export the table as either CSV or Excel format. Launch Monarch Classic, open the CSV or Excel file that was exported in DPS as Database in Classic. Create an export to fixed length text file.

I have a request for creation of a fixed length text file. Monarch Classic can export to fixed length text files. Does Data Prep have this capability and I am just not seeing it? Love the ease of using Data Prep to change formats easily!

Hi @Janet Grimsley
Not sure how time sensitive your request is so I wanted to reply as soon as possible.
Below is a screenshot of export options in DPS (Data Prep Studio). You have to select csv, change the extension to .txt and then select export options that will match your needs from the drop down menus.
Alternatively, as a last resort, you can export the data from DPS as a csv (standard options), open that csv file in Monarch Classic, and then apply your export options there.

Thanks for the input! CSV will not work here. The vendor specifically wants fixed length.Baba Majekodunmi_21731 said:Hi @Janet Grimsley

Mo, thanks for the reply! I had already started down your stated path #2, so I am glad to see that my concept was ok. Just wanted to be sure I was not missing something. As a follow up question, the text file will contain 1158 characters. Do you see any problems with that? The txt wants to wrap at 482 characters. Can that be changed?Mahmoud said:Hi Janet,

By the way option #2 is better, because you can create an automated Visual Process with two jobs, the first job creates the export from the DPS and the second job create fixed length text.
I am not exactly sure about your question regarding 1158 characters, unless I see the file.
Monarch classic input file length limit is 4000 characters. I don't see any issue having a record of 1158 characters.
Does each record in the text file is 1158 characters?
Does the text wraps at 482 characters in Monarch classic?
Can you elaborate more about text file of more than 1158 characters?

The total fixed length of one record/line is 1158. There are 82 data points for various fixed lengths that add up to 1158. Each record is creating 4 lines in the text file which has been exported from Classic.. Each record is breaking at text position 482, then 2 blank lines, then the 4th line displays the remaining data fields. I am wondering, if I need to change the text file options on the Home tab. Subject: Fixed Length Text File
Can that be changed?

Hi Janet,
The export to fixed length text file option is not available in DPS and you cannot export a table as fixed length text file in DPS.

Specifically this is for the FDIC Alert File which our core processing vendor can supply, BUT I have a request that requires me to create the file. Does anyone in the community happen to have anything built for this file and would like to share?

Hi Janet,
By the way option #2 is better, because you can create an automated Visual Process with two jobs, the first job creates the export from the DPS and the second job create fixed length text.

I meant to say change the field type to memo, and change the column with in table view to something long enough that can hold all 1158 characters. If you try to change the display width in the table deign to a number greater than 255, the program reset it back to 255.
However, you can change the column width to more than 255 in the table view by dragging the column.
