License error
Hello,
I have been running a CFD-DEM coupled simulation since the past 1 day and all of a sudden EDEM license got disconnected maybe because of some wifi issue.
I have a few questions:
1. Is this normal? This is quite an inconvenience for someone who is executing a simulation for a long time, please tell me if this is normal, help me find the cause of this license error (please refer to the attached image)
2. (Images 2 and 3) However, I'm a little puzzled as to how my fluent simulation is still running with DDPM particles coming into the domain even after the license issue. is this going to cause problems? Is this because EDEM releases particles and waits for fluent to apply forces?
3. Is there a way to reset EDEM simulation which has paused at 0.2 seconds back to 0 seconds and then rerun the setup in EDEM?
4. Is there a way to resume a coupled simulation which has stopped midway?
Please advise!
Thanks in advance,
Kiran

Hi Kiran,
You shouldn't see license errors although if you do have a server that is a laptop or similar then you can loose connections with updates and power-saving. Which version of EDEM are you using? We have seen some similar errors in 2023.1 to be fixed in 2024.
EDEM and Fluent run sequentially so I'd expect Fluent to keep running for 1 time-step, however if it's running after this I expect something has gone wrong and likely related to the license.
In the EDEM analyst you can export a simulation deck at 0.2 s and reset time to 0 but keep all the same conditions, you could use this as a starting point for a new coupled simulation.

Hello Stephen,
Thanks for your reply.
1. I'm using EDEM 2023.0 on my laptop. I'm sure it's the wifi, it sometimes gets disconnected and reconnects after a while. Shouldn't EDEM license reconnect when the wifi is back on?
Is there a way to find what exactly went wrong and why EDEM crashed? Maybe find the logfile? If this is possible please help me find the logfile.
2. I'm not sure how Fluent is still able to execute the simulation with particle data from EDEM. Please help me understand how I'm able to see .h5 files being saved in the '[filename]_data' folder. I have attached an image for your reference.
Do you think these files being generated would help me post process the results?
I hope the files in this folder are not corrupted and still readable.
3. Yes exporting the deck at a particular time step works!
Thank you
Regards,
Kiran

Hi Kiran,
You can start EDEM with the --debug-logger filename.txt flag and this will write out some extra information. However just running EDEM via command prompt should give you the time. There is some information on EDEM batch flags here:how-to-use-edem-batch-commands
The EDEM files get written out as the simulation progresses, so from the screenshot it does look like it stopped at around 8.20 AM, you should be able to open the simulation files as usual. If not in the Analyst you can go to File > Open and this defaults to opening the first file rather than the last (which can get corrupted if something happened during save).
