Adding Points/Markers to measure displacement

Hello,

first of all i have to say i am pretty new to MotionView and all the other Altair tools, so i am really overwhelmed while using them.

I imported my model of a cylinder with a piston from Inspire into MotionView.

Right now i am trying to add points to it, so i can measure the displacement between the bottom of the cylinder and the bottom of the piston.

In the first screenshot you can see the piston inside the cylinder (which i deactivated for clarity):

Piston_Cylinder

The point at the bottom got imported as I_point of the I-marker of my actuator.

I'm trying to add a point to the bottom of the piston, so i can add a marker for displacement measurement, as you can see in the second screenshot:

Point on piston

My problem is that i dont know the coordinates of this point in the global reference frame. So i tried to get the coordinates from nodes. But when i click the 'get coordinate fom node'-button nothing happens, even though MotionView shows me some nodes when i leftclick inside my ModelView.

nodes

Do I have to import the nodes seperatly to select them insde the Point-editor?

Best Regards,

Aiko

Did you create this model in inspire, and then export the .mdl and load the .mdl into MotionView?  It appears that you did not. If so, you can use the CAD feature recognition option (under Tools -> Options -> Build model, make sure that box is checked).  Then when you create a joint, etc. you can hover the mouse over your different CAD parts, and pick faces, centers of holes, etc to create points.

FYI, you can do this with any CAD that has been brought into MotionView via the File -> Import Geometry workflow.  From the appearance of your model it appears you used the import CAD from FE/Hypermesh.  This converts the CAD into h3d and meshes it.  You should be able to access nodes from that, but it isn't as efficient as using the File -> Import Geometry workflow.

It seems like you are very new to the tools.  We have some very good tutorials built into our help, if you search for MV-100 that will take you to the very first MotionView tutorial.

yes i am very new to the tools. The CAD feature recognition was exactly what i needed.

    Thank you very much!
