What should be proper thickness and properties for composite analysis?
Hello,
I just checked out composite tutorials and it is written that "The ply thickness is typically defined as the final cured thickness of a single ply of material."
How can I combine reinforcement / matrix properties and thickness then import as mat8 prop and ply thickness? I mean does it make sense that I assume 1mm thickness as 0.8 mm reinforcement and 0.2 mm matrix and just assign carbon fiber probs?
I am newbie on composite analysis, thanks for helping.

Hi,
Please take a look at this ebook in Altair Uniiversity.
https://altairuniversity.com/free-ebook-introduction-to-practical-aspects-of-composites/
It covers the main aspects on composite modeling in HyperWorks.
The ply is composed of the cured combination of your matrix (epoxy, i.e), and your fiber (carbon fiber, i.e).
So your MAT8 property will carry the final properties of this combined layer. Tipically we found 0.2~0.3mm of final cured thickness for each ply.
In general, the properties that you find in internet are related to the cured composite, as in the example below.
