Contact Parameter Tuning

Hi

I know this is a broad question but does anyone have a method for reliably tuning contact parameters? I have a simulation that requires 3 different contacts. The simulation is for  PhD thesis. I would like the contacts to be as realistic as possible without excessively long simulation. Is there any set method for tuning parameters etc. I am having difficult getting results without large fluctuations in the contact forces.

At the moment, I am using max time step = 0.0001 integrator tol = 0.0001 and h_min = 1*10^-8.

This very question is discussed often in the forums here,  I would suggest doing some reading through the forums.

There is also a very extensive discussion in our help.  Just search for 'Best practices contacts motionsolve' and that should give you some good hits.

 

Have you turned on 'find precise contact' in the Advanced tab for your contact definitions?  This is almost always a must.

 

If your parts are small, and/or the event you are trying to simulate happens very quickly, you may need to change the default model units to grams, and msec.  When doing so, note that the property data in your model does not update when you change model units, you need to also update anything affected by the unit change.
