Free edges to see whether the FE model has a connectivity where you intent to have and element normal to make sure the shell elements have a consistent positive and a negative side of it.

The shell element has a top and the bottom surface equally placed from the surface on which you have done a meshing.
You can always check stress & strain results on the elements at three locations, 1. Top fibre 2. bottom fibre and 3. mid plane.

Element normal helps defining which is top & which is bottom side of the element.

when you stress in the top or the bottom side at any given point in time, it may misguide you if element normals are not consistent.

I created a mesh and adjusted normal's in same color. So now in my modal the normal vector is towards Z-axis.

So what will be the difference If I applied load in Z-axis and If i applied load in -Z-axis?
