Tetra Mesh Self-Intersection

Hi,

I imported a deformed mesh into HM from ABAQUS and would like to remesh it according to certain element quality criteria. However, due to element distortions caused by previous FE analysis, the HM remesh function sometimes returns 'Self-intersection of the tetra mesh' and refused to remesh.

Is there any existing function in HM that can automatically remove these self-intersections?

Many thanks,

Wensong

    Hi Wensong,

I usually do this but with 2D mesh.

Please try with Tool -> Penetration -> Components and Include self interference -> Check -> Automatic fix.

    Best,

    Huynh

    Hi Huynh,

Thanks for the reply. I tried this but it shows zero intersection and penetration which is weird. Have you met this problem before?

    Many thanks,

    Wensong

    Hi Wensong,

have you tried with 3D intersections and penetrations?

    Hi Wensong,

have you tried with 3D intersections and penetrations?

    Hi Prakash,

Yes, I am pretty sure I have. Please have a look at the following two screenshots.

The first one is the return I got from HM when trying to remesh

This second one is the results I got from penetration and intersection check

Please let me know if you have problem seeing these pictures.

    Many thanks,

    Hi Wensong,

I have the model with me and looking into the issue.

Do you have any element quality criteria?

    Hi Wensong,

    Hi Prakash,

Yes, I do. Please see the picture attached.

However, these criteria are not compulsory. They are there to ensure there is no element self-intersection after a displacement FE analysis. Obviously with the better element quality, a larger displacement can be applied - hence allowing the analysis to be more efficient.

It would be extremely helpful if you can let me know how to fix these 'self-intersection' problems since ideally I would like to automate the process through command files.

Thank you so much for your help.

    Regards,

    Wensong

P.S. Speaking of element quality criteria, do you by any chance know why the 'Min Size' and 'Max Size' options can not be selected in the 'Edit Criteria' panel? Cheers
