Is the Solid map option usable only in case the solid volume between the two meshed surfaces does not contain any voids , like bolt holes ?

in the case of contrary what can be the mesh strategy to mesh a volume that has some holes that pass through the body ?

    Hi,

Solid map option works relatively for simple solids; complex objects must first be partitioned into simpler sections so that the sections can be meshed individually.

Even if all solids are mappable, they may not all be meshable at once; User has to mesh each mappable solid individually.

I'm attaching a tutorial with model file which shows solid map function for a similar model mentioned.

Thank you very much. How should I decide between Solid Map and volume tetra ? when to switch from one to the other?

    Hi,

Solid elements are generally used for 3D structures not fitting into the shell description. Castings, forgings, blocky structures, and volumes are all good examples of 3D solid element structures. User can choose between brick mesh or tetra mesh.

Below is a difference between brick vs tetra elements:

    • A brick mesh reduces the solution time.

    • Analysis types like crash or nonlinear give preference to brick mesh due to the number of nodes and mesh flow lines.

    • The time consumed in brick meshing is more and requires experience, hard work, and a lot of patience too.

    • Over the years, the algorithm for tetra meshing has improved and accuracy wise there is not much difference in tetra and brick elements.

Thank you very much for your answer. I understood your last point. Yet my question was mostly regarding to the fact that there are two different sections with different algorithms and options for these meshes. I was wondering why should exist two different sections

    Hi,

This is based on application. Some users specifically go for hexa elements. As mentioned before for crash applications brick mesh is preferred. But it requires good practice and patience for performing brick mesh. Whereas creating tetra mesh is easy and it requires least user interaction.

Please  go through https://altairuniversity.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/3DMeshing.pdf which describes about 3D Meshing.
