Greetings , I am Muthu from Germany. I have a wishbone suspension model which is already topology optimized so its in free-form structure. The topology Optimization not done by me. I got the model as .stp file and imported in HM and now the clarifications that I need ,

1) With this free-form structure since it is already topology optimized , so the meshing is done already. How can i minimize the computational effort of meshing in free-form structure and how I can proceed further with this available information i got in this model ?

2) How graded materials can be considered in the FEA like finding correct material behaviour ?

3)Lattice structure : when should i proceed for LS since i have already topology optimized model . When and How can i proceed for lattice structure in my topology optimized model . I want to use 2D beam.

I know these questions are basic, but it will be really helpful if I get clarified in these things. Thank you in advance for the replies and awaiting for more replies from admins.

P.S : Attached .stp file of my topology optimized wishbone suspension for the reference .

Thank you again

Kind Regards,

Muthu.

    Hi @muthu62

With this free-form structure since it is already topology optimized , so the meshing is done already. How can i minimize the computational effort of meshing in free-form structure and how I can proceed further with this available information i got in this model ?

The only way I see is to reduce the number of node by doing a coarse mesh to reduce the computational time provided without changing the current configuration

    2) How graded materials can be considered in the FEA like finding correct material behaviour ?

I am sorry I did not understand this question, Can you explain please? What material(s) information do you have?

3)Lattice structure : when should i proceed for LS since i have already topology optimized model . When and How can i proceed for lattice structure in my topology optimized model . I want to use 2D beam.

If you want to check if there will be any further mass reduction, prefer a lattice look on component you can go for lattice optimization. But what do you mean by 2D beam?

Hallo Prakash , Thank you for your reply.

The only way I see is to reduce the number of node by doing a coarse mesh to reduce the computational time provided without changing the current configuration

Since I have a model which is already Tologically optimized . Can I able to mesh again to reduce computational effort ( time) is that possible ? Btw I tried to use 3D tetra mesh it says some free edges . How I can look in the configurations that been already made in this model like mesh , loads or bc or how the analysis made in this model previous because after importing the model all i can see in the model tab is ''Component''.

I am sorry I did not understand this question, Can you explain please? What material(s) information do you have?

Graded Materials which are porous and vary over the component for instance (  Ceramic + Metal ) in 3D printing . My question was how can the porous material can be taken into account in the FEA? ( This question is not that important just for my knowledge i questioned but 1st and 3rd question is important )

If you want to check if there will be any further mass reduction, prefer a lattice look on component you can go for lattice optimization. But what do you mean by 2D beam?

When I can start lattice optimization in my model Since I dont have more information about my currect model ( BC, Load and what mesh was used before ) all I have only a component which is topology optimized . I dont know how i can make Lattice optimization with the information i have right now .

2D beam in the sense of creating 2D Element instead of 3D beam in the unit cell topology for Lattice cell structure. ( Just to create a detail modeling of unit cell ) .

I hope I made some what clear to you Mr. Prakash . Sorry If I didnt make it properly . Thanks in advance .

    Kind Regards,

    Muthu

Since you only have the CAD model it is not possible to see the previous mesh, Loads and BCs data. Regarding free edges, check if the CAD model is closed or not.

I believe porous materials maintains anisotropic behavior. if you have material Data you can use MAT2 for anisotropic material or you can realize to orthotropic and use MAT8/MAT9 material cards.

    Hallo Mr.Prakash ,

Thank you for your response , But can i able to apply the loads and BCs data from these two links to my CAD model for FEA ?

    http://www.altairhyperworks.com/hwhelp/Altair/hw14.0/help/hwsolvers/hwsolvers.htm?os2010.htm

    http://www.altairhyperworks.com/hwhelp/Altair/hw14.0/help/hwsolvers/hwsolvers.htm?os_2060.htm

First by doing coarse mesh as you said then applying the loads and BC from these two links then going for FEA . if it is feasible please let me know then after doing FEA on my model I planned to do lattice optimization .

and thanks for the information regarding porous materials much apprieciated

    Thank you.

    Kind Regards

    Muthu.

    Hi Muthu,

You can use the loads which are a part of tutorials. But is that loads which you have used for optimization?

    Hi Prakash ,

Thank you for your assist so far its much apprieciated :)/emoticons/default_smile.png' srcset='/emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x' title=':)' width='20' />

You can use the loads which are a part of tutorials. But is that loads which you have used for optimization?

Since I dont know which method or the load conditions which was used earlier. All I got was this free-form structure which is already Topology Optimized. Since I am not conveying you precisely i will Copy - Paste the info which I received from my supervisor.

    He said this ,

You should not make any topology optimization. Just FEA, for example of TO-Results.

    There are 3 main topics:

    1.       free form surfaces: (resulting from TO à that’s why I gave you the TO wishbone, which is also a vehicle part --> conform to CVT study)

normally you need a fine mesh to approximate the shape, but a fine mesh results in high computational effort….

--> your task is to find out how computational effort can be reduced (guideline)

    2.       graded materials:

modelling a porous material is nonsense, but how can it be taken into account in the FEA?

--> your task is to find out how correct material behaviour can be considered (guideline)

    3.       lattice structures:

they could be modelled 3-dimensionall (as beam, or as solid), but that is only acceptable for very small volumes, for big volumes the expenditure is to high, but how can it be considered?

--> your task is to develop a approach, how LS can be taken into account in a FEA (maybe detailed modelling of a LS unit cell and with the results creation of an adapted material setting?!) (guideline)

    http://www.altairhyperworks.com/hwhelp/Altair/hw14.0/help/hwsolvers/hwsolvers.htm?os2010.htm

    http://www.altairhyperworks.com/hwhelp/Altair/hw14.0/help/hwsolvers/hwsolvers.htm?os_2060.htm

--> see for boundary conditions and loads/load cases of the wishbone

This is what I received so far , I got clue for the 2nd task about graded materials from the info you said in earlier post but rest i dont know how to proceed. It would be really helpful how I can start the thing. If I got a flow in working in Hypermesh under this topic then I can finish :)/emoticons/default_smile.png' srcset='/emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x' title=':)' width='20' /> I hope I told everything from my side :)/emoticons/default_smile.png' srcset='/emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x' title=':)' width='20' /> i am really looking for your response . Thanks alot in advance Mr.Prakash .

    Kind Regards ,

    Muthu.

    Muthu,

    1) You can reduce the computation time by increasing the power of your machine or use 1st order elements instead of parabolic formulations and try to optimize the mesh. Have fine mesh where ever it is needed and avoid where it is not... Remove unwanted geometries like small fillets, holes, etc...

    2) I need more details about the material. Can you provide the data? If the material has orthotropic properties, you can use MAT9, MAT9ORT for solid elements.

    3) There are tutorials available on Lattice structure. You can refer to those tutorials on how to model for lattice structure optimization.

    Hi Prakash,

Thanks for your information First I will try to reduce the computation effort by the info you have provided , But is it possible to analyse computational effort or time that the computer taken for the corresponding meshing , Since I have planned to compare everything with the results . So if it is possible let me know . I am trying to calculate stress analysis  from the given load and BC's.

Then I am planning to apply the lattice optimization . The information regarding about the material is I got only graded materials ( Which is not uniform and change over the component like ceramic + metal ).

But I will check for the materials and let you know :)/emoticons/default_smile.png' srcset='/emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x' title=':)' width='20' /> Awaiting for your kind response .

    Kind Regards,

    Muthu.
