    codiak,

For solid meshing, you should always partition the geometry into 'mappable' regions,

Solid (3D) meshing can be done automatically, just like 2D shell meshing, but often requires that complex parts be partitioned into groups of smaller, simpler, connected solids instead of one large complex sold.

Partitioning is accomplished via the Geom page's Solids panel.

    See

HyperWorks Desktop Applications > HyperMesh > User's Guide > Meshing > Volume Meshing > Solid Meshing Practices:

    Partitioning Solids for Mappability

and the hexa meshing section of training center, training.altairuniversity.com and the 3d meshing tutorials in HyperMesh help
