Hello. I want to get some solid elements by offsetting the shell elements; however, there are always some error elements at the corner. Can anybody help me solve this problem? Thank you.

    Hi,

Did you try with the element offset option (3D page>>elem offset, solid layers), which will  create and modify  elements by offsetting from a mesh of plate or shell elements. The element normals provide directional information. Please refer Help menu on this.

Thank you, George. Actually I used that option, however, after the offset (5 layers with 0.65 mm thickness in total), there are always some error elements (I did mesh check in Abaqus) around the corner. I cannot start my simulation in Abaqus with these error elements. I was wondering how to modify or repair these error elements? or how to change the settings in the offset option to avoid these error elements? Thank you.

    Hi,

Did you check the element quality in HyperMesh, and you can correct those failed elements in HyperMesh. Can you try correcting this element quality in HyperMesh and after that run in Abaqus.

    hi

    try increasing mesh size

cannot offset if mesh size is small compared to thickness

Thank you, George. I tried to find how to correct the element quality, but didn't find it. Can you tell me how to correct the element quality?

    Hi,

Please go through HM-3200: Tetrameshing tutorial in the Help Menu which shows creating and improving the quality of tetramesh elements.

Hello, George. Actually my solid elements are Penta6, which were obtained by offsetting the tria elements.

    Hello,

There are certain element quality parameters that can be found through 'check element' panel in 'Tool' Page.

When you click on a parameter it will highlight the elements which do not meet the quality.

From there you can edit those elements by many options available like edit element, split or translate the nodes so that the elements meet the quality parameters.

More information on how to correct these errors is available in the book Practical Aspects of Finite Element Simulation (A Study Guide) from page 238.

    Thank you
