Unable to Append in Monarch DPS v13.5
Hey everyone,
I have a Microsoft Access database that has two tables that are identical, but the only difference between the two of them is one table is used for current, relevant data, and the other is used for archive data. However, once again, both tables are structured identically, but unfortunately, DPS does not acknowledge they could be appended into one table. Has anyone else experience this type of issue with this type of data, and/or does anyone have a work around for it?

David,
What are you doing in order to join the tables?
How are you approaching the requirement?

Hi David,
It would be good to get to the root cause, but as a workaround, you should be able to append them in the "Prep Data" window. Hit Ctrl-A to select all tables (or the normal Windows ctrl-Click) if you have other tables, then right click on a table and choose an append operation.
Append Tables->Strict Append should work fine if the table structures are identical in Data Prep. If not, the Append Helper should guide you through the process. It might also help to show why Data Prep is not happy to append them from the Preview Data windows.
I did see some issues where the "Append" button didn't seem to keep up to date with the table selections in the earlier versions of Data Prep Studio. Have you tried 'clearing' and re selecting the tables in the preview window? If you have an opportunity to upgrade to 14, it would be worthwhile I believe. in fact, 14.1 is due to be released imminently with major enhancements to the change list.
Regards,
Steve.

I tried this, but it will not allow me the option to Append. It is grayed out and inactive. We do intend to upgrade to 14.1 in the near future, and it is good to hear that these types of minor bugs may be resolved.

I am not attempting to do a join, but instead, I am trying to do an append, where the data is added to the existing columns of a current table with the same structure. However, the append option is not available, although the tables are identical (one is simply an archived/housing area for completed work while the other collects the data to be analyzed that will later need to be appended/moved [for lack of a better term] into the archive). I was hoping to do perform the action quickly in Data Prep Studio (DPS). I am currently using version 13.2.

Correction: I am using version 13.2 if that provides any further insight.

Sorry - I misread your reply. I see you already tried the option above. If you are able to pin the table and send me the workspace, I can test it in V14 for you.

Steve.

David, I believe you're talking about the "Append Selected Tables" button on the Prep Data screen (below). If that's not lighting up, for whatever reason, what you need to do is "Load Selected Tables," then select both tables in the Workspace, right-click (as in Steve's screenshot above) and probably go for "Match Columns on Order and Name"
If matching on order/name doesn't work, use the Append Helper where you can manually match all the columns.
This video goes through all the options for appending, and it was made in an older version of DPS: Datawatch Monarch | Smart Append - YouTube

Hey everyone,
I appreciate the insight from everyone, and I have attached two images below to show everyone what I am experiencing. Although it may be harder to see, the second image illustrates the gray out of any append option. Once again, the structure of both tables are identical, but DPS is not identifying it as such, which is preventing me from appending the tables together. Any help is appreciated.

Ah! You said you're using 13.2... this was before we developed the "Smart Append" abilities (which includes Append Helper).
From that version, the best advice I would give is to triple check that the columns on both tables are (1) named exactly the same, (2) in the exact same order, and (3) all the exact same data type.
