Shell Meshing with Varying Thickness

Hello Guys,

I have a complex non-linear geometry to mesh for which creating mid-surface is really difficult task. In my Geometry i managed to create Outer surface of it and it is possible to mesh now.

So, the problem is basically i have different thickness throughout the geometry and i need to map different thickness to the shell elements.

Is it possible anyway in Hypermesh ?

Thanks & Regards,

Ashish

    Hi

enter menu Mesh >> assign >> midmesh thickness

    Hello,

First you need to extract the midsurface

Then you can use any of the following option

    1)Create Different properties

You can organize the elements of different thickness in different components. then respectively create properties for them with the correct thickness and then assign them.

    2)Utility menu>Geometry mesh>midsurface thickness

This option will consider the existing elements for assigning the thickness. Here you are allowed to do the surface editing. But the surface which you are meshing should be extracted mid surface of the required Geometry.

    3) Menu>>Assign>>Midmesh Thickness

This is the best option as you can select the elements and apply the thickness.

    Thankyou

    Thanks for your replies !

This method is nice to know.

But my Geometry is too complex to extract  Mid-Surface.

What can be other solution to map thickness without extracting mid-surface ?

    Thanks !!

    Regards,

midmesh thickness tool doesn't require midsurf, select cad surfs

    Hi Tinh,

    Thanks for your reply !

    I already did this

    image.png.6c5ac80c7733ce4e75d7b15beabc3f1e.png

In place of Geometry i have selected all the given surfaces of the geometry, it has executed but created really wierd surfaces and also this program has detected only few surfaces to execute.

    Thanks !

    Regards,

    Hello,

Can you please try and organize the surfaces with different thickness in different components. The create different properties for each component depending on their thickness and then assign those components the respective properties.

I mean to say create different properties for different values of thickness. The assign these properties to respective surfaces.

    Thankyou

Beware: If your structure is too complex to extract Mid-surfaces and the thickness varies too much, maybe SHELL modelisation is NOT so good.

    Hi All,

Can we do the same by using ABAQUS user profile?

It looks like only opstitruct profile supports these options.

    Thanks in advance.

    Please try Direct midmesh.

Midmeshing : Automatically generate a mesh at the midplane location, directly from the input geometry (components, elements, solids or surfaces), without first creating a midsurface
