Difference in Normal Stiffness Definition Between EDEM and PFC (Linear Spring Model)

User: "Nathen"

I am currently studying the linear elastic contact models in EDEM and PFC (Particle Flow Code) manuals and noticed a difference in how normal stiffness (kn) is defined between the two softwares. I would like to clarify whether these models would produce consistent results if identical material parameters (e.g., elastic modulus, particle radii, density, etc.) are used. As a newcomer to DEM simulations, I would greatly appreciate your insights to help me understand the rationale behind these distinctions.

    Hi Nathen,

I won't suggest comparing any two software's because though mathematical equations are same some constant parameters and the way implementation difference based on each individual due to their expertise.

I would suggest please go through the reference papers from EDEM bibliography in help page and compare with your theoretical equations if this meeting your requirement use in built physics model, if you feel need to add some more variables use EDEM API model and customize based on your requirement and plugin in to EDEM to run the simulation.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,
