Pattern grouping in Optimization
Hey,
i want to optimize a wheel structure and need to use cyclic pattern grouping to get equal structures for every spoke.
But also I need a symmetry to the midplane (normal to the wheel axis).
I can't use cyclic and 1-plane pattern grouping, right?
How can I solve this?
Thank you!

Hi,
this is actually a limitation. You can't combine both symmetry into a single design space.
But you could try this:
- create 2 design spaces, splitting your wheel in the midplane. (1 prop for each half)
- for one half, you will define a topology desvar (master), and cyclic symmetry
- still in this design variable you will go to the pattern repetition, and define it as a master, picking 3 nodes defining a "reference system"
- then, create a second topology desvar, selecting the other half, and go to the pattern repetition, picking again, 3 nodes, now, defining them as 'slave', reflected compared to the master orientation. then, reference the master design variable created previously
This setup will force the second half to be exactly as the 1st half, per pattern repetition.

Thank you!
Is this also possible for composite optimization?

i'm not sure what is your context with composites in this case, but draw would be applicable to mostly solids structures.
