How can I time velocity flow-field input to be after particle creation?

I'm studying fluidized bed behavior, and I'd like it so that I can start the inlet gas to only activate after particle creation. Particle creation is partly limited to time because of collisions with other particles, geometries, etc. so how can I go about this?

I hinged a lot of my project on the CFD-DEM coupling method used in this windshifter tutorial.

    Hello,

I believe that there may be options on the AcuSolve side to delay the flow start or set a starting time for it while the coupling is still running with only DEM gravity affecting the particles, but someone from the AcuSolve team would be best to give you some tips on this.

I thought that two things may help you from the DEM side when setting up this case, depending on how the model set-up should be (hopefully one of them helps you).

You could freeze the particles if you are generating them with a static factory or all in a specified area, so that the particles don't move at all or are able to move at most with a very low velocity. This is done in the creator by using Particle Limits in the physics section

Alternatively, it may help you to create the material in the location that you want and once all the material is created (Maybe contained in a physical volume) you could export the deck to use it as a starting point for the coupled simulation (in which you could switch the physical volume holding the particles into virtual). To do this, once your material is created go to the analyst > File > Export > Simulation deck and set it's new name and location and I'd recommend to activate the checkbox to start at time 0.

Hopefully this helps, but if not it should be possible to modify the simulation settings from the AcuSolve side, will let one of my colleagues from that team comment on this.

    Kind regards

I'm not a user of EDEM - but can you create the particles as a separate EDEM run and save that information - to then use that database for the EDEM-AcuSolve simulation?  (Now that I read the previous comment more carefully, I think that's the suggestion...)

On the AcuSolve side, you can apply a multiplier function to the inlet velocity/mass-flow-rate/volume-flow-rate to specify values in time.

Yes you can have a first EDEM simulation file which you could run to generate the material and have it in the area or region of interest. Then from the Analyst (postprocessing section), you can go to File > Export > Simulation deck and create a new simulation file using the existing one as the starting point at time 0 so that when the coupling starts with AcuSolve the material will be already there for the fluid flow to start directly.
