Helo,

I am conducting strength analysis on steel cast components.

While analysisg the results, which failure theory I should follow?  Max. principal stress theory or von Mises theory ?

and what stress I should look for? vonmises or max principal stress?

how exactly I should decide whether a particular material is ductile or brittle ??

Thanks.

    Hi,

You can check for Ultimate or yield stress what is given to you. If ultimate, it will be brittle and yield in case of ductile material.

You can also check for the percentage elongation of the material, If the elongation is more than 15%, it will act and fall under ductile material as it has the tendency to elongate as against of brittle.

Most of the cast components are brittle, so you can go for Max. principle stress theory and stresses, but make sure above two things about material specifications.

    Hope it will help you.
